About Department of Community Education and Disability Studies

 

For the overall development of the society, it is important to understand the issues pertaining to the development of the community and the individuals, specifically. In order to understand the dynamics of community life, theoretically and practically, it trains the students to develop skills and competence for catering to the learning needs of the students so that they could contribute to the overall development of the society.

The Department was established in the year 2007. It offers Master's course in Community Education and Development. Ph.D. (Community Education and Development), B.Ed. Special Education (Learning Disability). Highlights the objectives of Programs:

  • To produce new knowledge in the area of special education and community education by the involvement of Faculty Members and Research Scholars.
  • To enable the students to understand the issues pertaining to community development at the national as well as at the global level.
  • To make the students aware about the different facets of community life, theoretically, as well as practically.
  • Imparting training and building human resources which is the need of the hour for the overall development of the society by having partnership with state, civil society and NGOs etc.
  • To produce Special Education teachers for children with special needs for various settings (Inclusive, Special, Open School and Home Based Education).
  • To enable the students to acquire knowledge & skills about human development, contemporary Indian education, and pedagogy of various school subjects and assessment for learning.
  • To enrich students with knowledge & skills about nature and educational needs of children with disabilities as well as of specific disabilities.
  • To enable students about conceptual understanding of educational provisions mentioned in NEP 2020 for children with various disabilities in Special and inclusive settings.

Thrust Area:
Since our department is interdisciplinary in nature and area of specialization is community development, education and empowerment and B.Ed in Learning Disability. So, our main focus is to work in community/village for intensive interventions for community development and empowerment. Most of our research is involved at the grass root level like health, education and enrollment of every child, safe drinking water, access to primary and secondary health care, awareness regarding various projects and programmes being run by government of India. Regarding learning disability since it is a new area so research on prevention, identification, intervention, rehabilitation and education are undertaken.

Placement:
The Department keeps the records of every student. Speakers, resource persons, and very experienced professionals from the fields of education, community education, special education, inclusive education, health care, nutrition, psychology, psychiatry and other multidisciplinary areas are invited to deliver talks and interact with students, parents and stake holders. Placement Cell of Department intends to increase interaction with schools, colleges, NGOs, and other institutions for better placement opportunities for students of the Department.

Alumni:
Establish a link with former students of this department and enroll them as members; Establish liaison between the alumni of the department and Panjab University Alumni Association (PUAA) and similar other associations at the universities in the country and abroad; Arrange get together of the alumni and social/cultural functions of the alumni; Provide a forum for the alumni for exchange of ideas on academic, cultural and social issues of the day.
